manchester airport baggage limit changed to stop staff injuries
09.03.05
Manchester Airport is to lower its baggage limit to reduce injuries to its baggage handlers. The new guidelines are aimed at avoiding baggage handlers having to lift heavy suitcases. From 1 April, Manchester Airport will not accept items of luggage weighing more than 32kgs.
Couples are being urged to separate their luggage, and 're-pack' areas have been set up at the airport for those who are forced to reorganise their bags. Manchester airport says that number of manual handling injuries are increasing year on year and that two pieces of luggage weighing 20kgs are much safer and easier to handle than one piece at 40kg.
John Spooner, managing director of the airport said: 'If couples choose to use just one suitcase it mustn't weigh more than 32kgs, so it's actually better for passengers to pack individually because that way they each get their full luggage entitlement.'
