Manchester Airport garage closes its doors
07.01.08
An ex-paratrooper who has been helping jet-setting passengers at Manchester Airport with their cars for more than 50 years is to retire, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Jack Males, 73, set up Males Garage and Car-storage on Ringway Road next to the airport in 1954. He has seen the hub grow around his garage from a small aerodrome to an international airport handling more than 22 million people a year. On Friday, he locked the doors on the building next to Terminal 3 for the final time.
The land will be used by the airport as part of a planned expansion of its apron and extra parking for planes, to cope with the growth in passenger numbers in years to come. Duncan Johnson, who has worked at the garage for 15 years, has taken over the business. It will now be called Manchester Airport Valet Parking and will operate from a different site at the airport.
