Images produced by ‘naked’ scanners to be blurred
06.08.11
Passengers travelling through airports in the future are unlikely to have outline images of them naked viewed by security guards. The US Transportation Security Administration has approved plans to roll out upgrades to its full body scanners at US airports, which will eliminate the naked image that appears on an operator's screen. Instead it will be replaced with a computer-generated outline or silhouette. The move is likely to be followed at UK airports.
Suspicious objects will be superimposed on the outline to ensure the security procedure is not compromised. The changes are expected to please those who have complained that scanners are an infringement of civil liberties and reduce embarrassment for travellers.
TSA administrator John Pistole said: ‘This software upgrade allows airports to continue providing a high level of security through advanced imaging technology screening, while improving the passenger experience at check points.' The scanners are in place at 15 UK airport terminals including all Heathrow and Gatwick terminals, Stansted, Birmingham and Manchester airports.
