Manchester Airport to gain tram link
05.08.10
Manchester Airport is to be connected to the city centre by tram link by 2016. The decision to give the green light to three new connections for the city's Metrolink tram system was taken in a meeting of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) this week.
Some £0.5 billion has been committed from the Greater Manchester Transport Fund to connect Manchester Airport to the tram system by the middle of 2016. Oldham and Rochdale town centres will both also be served by the trams by spring 2014.
Geoff Muirhead, chief executive of the Manchester Airports Group, said: ‘We are delighted at this news. We have been long standing supporters of the Metrolink extension since it was first proposed.’ He added that the hub has already invested £100 million in the airport station facilities.
