Manchester Airport has huge baggage backlog
05.01.11
A huge backlog of lost luggage has built up at Manchester Airport after last month’s snow chaos, the MEN reports. It is dealing with so many misplaced bags that they are having to store them in the cargo centre, because they have run out of space in the terminals.
Most of the hundreds of bags belong to people who lost touch with their luggage after missing connecting flights to Manchester because of the snow. Their bags became caught up in the system and did not follow them when they finally caught flights to their destinations. BA even drafted in extra staff and volunteers over the Christmas period to try to reunite passengers with their luggage, but the MEN reports there is still a four-day backlog.
An airport spokesman said: ‘We are aware that some passengers arriving into Manchester in the last 10 days have suffered delays in receiving their luggage. This has been due to weather related problems at connecting airports, and full flights over the Christmas period that left minimal space for delayed bags.'
‘The airport assigned its own staff to assist our service partners in resolving the issue, and the majority of bags have been reunited with their owners. We will look carefully into the situation in conjunction with our service partners to see if any improvements can be made for the future.’
A spokeswoman for BA apologised to affected passengers. She said: ‘There is a backlog and we are working with the contractors to get passengers reunited with their luggage. We had exceptional weather conditions last month and that had a knock-on effect at Manchester.’
