Manchester Airport flight diverted over gales
01.02.08
Severe gales that have been blasting the north west this winter returned with a vengeance today, affecting flights at Manchester Airport. Gusts of 60 mph were measured in Greater Manchester this morning, with forecasters warning that they could reach 70 mph in places.
A jet carrying 245 passengers to Manchester from Toronto diverted to Glasgow Airport because of the storm. The Air Transat Airbus A313 was due to land at Manchester Airport at 08:30, but the captain decided to head for the Scottish airport instead.
The airport was buffeted by strong winds and sleet, but there were no further diversions. However, the conditions also made driving difficult, blowing over fence panels and ripping off tree branches.
