easyJet revenues up 12%

easyJet reported total sales up 12% to £721m in the quarter April - June. It said that non-UK holidaymakers taking advantage of the strong euro have left it ‘resilient’ in the global downturn. Rival airlines cutting capacity also helped to increase passenger numbers by 2.9% in the period to 11.9m and the load factor, or proportion of seats filled, increased 1.2 percentage points to 84.7%.
Revenue from extra charges - such as checked-in baggage and in-flight food - jumped 34% during the three month period. However, tough economic conditions meant it expects a 2009 profit of between £25m and £50m, making it 'one of the few profitable airlines this year.'
A spokesman said easyJet attracted more business travellers as they switched from full-service carriers such as British Airways to save money. Its market share increased particularly at Gatwick and in Milan, Paris and Madrid. He added easyJet plans to have nearly 200 aircraft by September 2011, up from 177 at end of June this year, in line with growth plans that it set out in May.
