easyJet call for tough aircraft emissions limits
27.11.09
easyJet has called on the Government to introduce legislation requiring ‘tough, mandatory emission standards for aircraft’. The budget airline says that this would reduce CO2 emissions from the next generation of aircraft by 40 percent.
It has recommended that new standards should be introduced in three steps, beginning with short haul aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737, which have been in service for over 20 years. By 2015 easyJet said that all new aircraft would have to meet the new standard and by 2024 no airlines should be allowed to buy new aircraft failing to meet the standard. The final stage, to be completed by 2030, would bar airlines from operating any aircraft which fail to meet the standard.
This is not the first time that easyJet has suggested the scheme, or banning of older aircraft. It may just be a coincidence that easyJet operates one of the newest aircraft fleets, whereas some of its competitors - such as charter airlines operating to the holiday destinations it increasingly serves - tend to operate older fleets.
