Luton Airport drug smugglers jailed

Two Lithuanians who swallowed 100 packets of cocaine in a bid to smuggle them in to the UK via Luton Airport – but were caught when hospital x-rays confirmed the drugs were in their stomachs - were jailed last week. Kestutis Jankauskis, 26, and Mantas Ramonas, 20, were intercepted by UK Border Agency officers when they arrived at Luton on a flight from Madrid with about 1kg of the drug shortly after midnight on November 11 last year.
The two men told officers they were visiting Ramonas’ sister, who they said was living in the UK, but were arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling when they could not supply an address. They were taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital where X-rays revealed the illicit contents of their stomachs. They had tried to evade detection by swallowing the drugs worth an estimated £40,500 in 100 individual packages.
Mr Jankauskis and Mr Ramonas were sentenced to four and- a-half years and three years respectively at Isleworth Crown Court after they pleaded guilty in court to the smuggling charges.
