New Luton Airport link road opened

A 'challenging' road scheme, the biggest ever undertaken by Luton Borough Council, to link the M1 with Luton Airport was officially opened last Thursday. The £22 million East Luton Corridor saw the upgrading of the A1081 and A505 Airport Way to a dual carriageway, a new bus-only road from Luton Parkway station to the airport and a new dual carriageway between Airport Way and Percival Way.
The scheme encountered problems from the start, including the withdrawal of regional funding, meaning the council had to find the cash elsewhere. Technical problems encountered by contractors also meant that instead of taking 19 months to finish the road, it took more than 3 years.
On Thursday the road was opened by Lord Bill McKenzie of Luton, minister for the Department of Work and Pensions. The council says the project has kick-started the redevelopment of the old Vauxhall site, now known as Napier Park, which could eventually become home to up to 2000 homes, offices, shopping, warehouses, and a hotel / conference centre.
