easyJet to follow Ryanair on allocated seats

easyJet will follow in the footsteps of rival Ryanair and launch a reserved-seating trial in a revenue-raising drive that further shakes up the European low cost carrier sector and will appeal to the business sector it is increasingly targeting, the Wall Street Journal reports. The move could be announced today, when easyJet reports its full-year results.
Ryanair has been trialing a system where passengers are charged £10 to reserve certain seats on a small number of flights. Allocated seating has proved popular with families who want to sit together as well as business passengers who are keen to exit the plane first, despite the extra cost. Last week, Ryanair said it was doubling its trial to 80 routes, adding it could be rolled out to all 1500 routes if further trials prove successful.
easyJet has introduced flexi-fares to capture more of the lucrative business travel market. Like Ryanair, easyJet offers priority boarding at a cost and is keen to increase its business passengers, from which it generates a 10%-20% yield premium compared with leisure travel.
