easyJet offer pilots and crew unpaid leave

easyJet is to offer pilots and cabin crew unpaid leave this winter as part of a drive to save £125 million a year by September 2011, according to documents posted on its website. The budget airline said it wants to save £30 million a year by upgrading IT systems to help roster staff more efficiently, and by offering unpaid leave. It will also hire new crew on fixed-term and seasonal contracts rather than offering permanent contracts.
A spokesman for easyJet said the temporary contract initiative had already been in place for the last two summers to help deal with that peak travel period. Unpaid leave is being offered over the winter season, when demand is traditionally weak. In previous winters staff have been offered unpaid leave of between two weeks and six months.They will not be forced to take unpaid leave, the spokesman added.
