easyJet staff job loss protest
15.09.09
easyJet staff are set to protest over cutbacks that could put more than 200 jobs at risk. Cabin crew and flight staff from the budget airline, along with their families, will march through Luton to demonstrate concerns over planned cuts at Luton Airport.
Earlier this month easyJet announced plans to close its East Midlands Airport base and to reduce services at Luton Airport by 20%. The budget airline has blamed the planned reduction in services at Luton Airport on a breakdown in talks about charges with the airport's Spanish operator and the local council (who own the airport and lease it to Spain's Albertis).
easyJet is also consulting on a reduction of the number of flight crew at Belfast, Bristol, Newcastle and Stansted airports, and will shift its planes to more profitable routes on continental Europe.
Staff and their families will march through the town dressed in orange to highlight their fears. The group will march from St Mary's Church to the Town Hall where they will present a letter of complaint to the leader of the council. They also plan to let off 565 balloons, which represents every job they say is at risk.
