easyJet confirm East Midlands base closure / Luton cuts
07.12.09
easyJet has confirmed that it will pull out of East Midlands Airport and reduce capacity by 20% Luton Airport. The low-cost carrier confirmed that after a 90-day consultation with staff it will close its base at East Midlands and cut capacity at its home base by 20%.
On January 5, the airline will stop its operations at East Midlands Airport. And although the number of aircraft at Luton Airport will remain at 16, the departing passenger volumes will fall to 1.9 million - down from 2.6 million in 2008 - after a row over airport charges.
easyJet says there will be no compulsory redundancies. The capacity reduction at Luton Airport means the airline will no longer operate routes to Athens, Cagliari and Vienna, as well as reduce frequencies on routes including Alicante, Dortmund, Edinburgh, Geneva, Glasgow, Nice and Paris.
