Reuben brothers to ‘swoop for Silverjet’
07.06.08
David and Simon Reuben are reported to be plotting a last-minute bid for Silverjet, the Luton Airport business-class-only airline that collapsed last week, the Telegraph reports. The billionaire property developers - worth an estimated £4.3bn - are understood to be the failed airline's largest creditor after lending the company £10m last November.
Silverjet operated three aircraft flying from London Luton to New York and Dubai, but grounded its fleet a week ago. However Begbies Traynor, the company's administrator, is hopeful of selling the business as a going concern, with reports suggesting that this could happen next week.
Mark Fry, joint-administrator, said he was aware of an expression of interest from the Reuben brothers but added: ‘We are not in any formal negotiations.’ Other bidders for Silverjet are Kingplace - a shelf company registered in Ireland and managed by Heritage Cie, a Geneva trust and management company - and an unnamed airline. It is unclear if a successful bid would secure jobs for Silverjet's 300 staff.
Nigel Atkinson, the other joint-administrator, told Reuters on Friday the Silverjet may be sold as early as Monday. He said: ‘I am reasonably confident that I'll be able to announce on Monday that we will be moving on with one of the offers.’
