easyJet and Virgin win OAG awards

easyJet was named the world's best low-cost airline at the Official Airline Guide (OAG) Airline Industry Awards in London this week. The budget airline beat off competition from jetBlue, Jetstar, Ryanair and Southwest Airlines to take the award. It was the first time this award has gone to a European low cost airline.
Also picking up awards were BA, taking the best transatlantic operator and best business / executive class awards, and Virgin Atlantic, named the best airline based in western Europe. Singapore Airlines was the airline of the year for 2008, beating American Airlines, BA, Emirates and Lufthansa. It also picked up awards for best airline based in Asia and best international first class.
Other award recipients included LAN, Czech, Lufthansa, Continental, American, Qantas, Air New Zealand, Emirates and South African Airways. Singapore Changi was voted the Best Airport. Heathrow wasn't on the short list.
