easyJet plan big UK jobs / flights cuts
03.09.09
easyJet announced today that it plans to move some of its aircraft from the UK to more profitable bases on the continent. The budget airline said flights from Luton Airport could be cut by up to 20 percent, while it plans to close its base in the East Midlands and cut staff at Belfast, Bristol, Newcastle and Stansted airports. It did not identify its choices for new or expanded bases.
The airline said it would consult on a reduction of the number of flight crews at its bases in Belfast, Bristol, Newcastle and Stansted, and that it plans to close its base at East Midlands airport. At Luton a row over landing charges means easyJet plans to cut flights by up to 20 percent, and relocate them to profitable bases in continental Europe.
A spokesman for the airline said: ‘We are deeply disappointed that [the Spanish operator of Luton] Abertis and Luton Borough Council have not taken a more far-sighted approach which would have protected jobs at Luton.'
easyJet currently employs 530 pilots and cabin crew at Luton, its home and operational base. It employs 120 staff at East Midlands Airport. The spokesman said: ‘At East Midlands, we cannot see a growing long term future and have decided to move our assets to markets with better long term potential.'
The consultation on crew numbers at Belfast, Bristol, Newcastle and Stansted affects about 40 staff, the spokesman said.
