September launch for BA London City – New York flights
23.06.09
British Airways' new business-only service from London City Airport to New York JFK is to start on September 29. The flights will cost up to £5,625 return, with BA is touting the service as the most convenient link between the City of London and Wall Street.
The airline has bought two Airbus A318 aircraft, with space for just 32 passengers, to operate the service. As well as flat-bed Business-Class seats and excellent in-flight service there will be Internet access. But the flights to New York will not be direct. There will be a refueling stop at Shannon Airport in the West of Ireland before continuing on to JFK.
The advantage of stopping at Shannon is that passengers can clear US Immigration there rather than at JFK. With a quick check-in time at London City Airport (15 minutes) and the refueling stop (45 minutes) BA believes that the flights will be as quick as other transatlantic services. And the return flights (from New York to London City) will be non stop.
First tickets for the service go on sale today, with fares from £1,901 return at the weekend, £4,912 for discounted weekday returns and £5,625 for fully flexible tickets, which are similar to the airline's fares from Heathrow.
There will be two returns flights each day except Saturday. The airline has chosen to give the flights numbers BA001, BA002, BA003 and BA004 - formerly used for its Concorde flights. BA001 will leave London City at 12:40 and arrive in JFK at 17:05. BA002 departs JFK at 18:30 and arrives at London City at 07:05 the following day. BA003 will depart London City at 16:00 and arrive at JFK at 2025. BA004 departs JFK at 21:50 and arrives at London City at 10:25 the following morning.
