Marathon runners fly in to London City Airport
23.04.10
London Marathon runners held up by the restrictions on air travel flew in to London City Airport yesterday, as event organisers spent almost £150,000 to charter planes to fly elite athletes in ahead of the weekend's big race. Race organisers managed to get many of the elite runners to central Europe, before sending planes to collect them.
At the same time BA was repatriating 1,000 passengers stranded in Spain due to the volcanic ash disruption by sending out extra aircraft from the Docklands airport. BA CityFlyer is operating five additional services from London City to Madrid and Barcelona between yesterday and Sunday.
