London City Airport protesters plans flash mob
18.11.09
Protesters angry about an increase in flights at London City Airport are to stage a 'flash mob' demonstration outside Ilford Town Hall tomorrow (November 19). The protest is timed to coincide with a council meeting held that evening in the building, during which the issue of the airport's expansion will be discussed.
Neighbouring Newham Council, the planning authority for London City Airport, approved an increase of 50,000 flights in July, taking its annual total over East London up to 120,000. The airport and Newham Council have both argued the increase in flights will prove beneficial to the economies of East London communities. However, protesters say Redbridge Council was not consulted over the issue.
A motion at the council meeting, put forward by the Liberal Democrats, calls on the chief executive of the council to carry out ‘an immediate investigation into what Redbridge Council knew about the London City expansion, and what action was taken on the council's behalf’. The motion also calls on councillors to ‘recognise residents' concerns.’
The protesters will meet outside the Kenneth More Theatre at 18:30.
