A British Airways passenger jet carrying 72 people crash-landed at London City Airport this evening after part of its landing gear failed. One person was taken to a hospital with a minor injury, thought to have been sustained on leaving the plane.
The BAE Systems-manufactured Avro RJ100 was operating BA Flight 8456 from Amsterdam. The airline said in a statement the plane's nose wheel failed on landing. Emergency slides were deployed to evacuate the passengers.
Firefighters said the plane, which crashed onto the runway around 19:45, was carrying 67 passengers and five crew. London ambulance officials said four people were treated for minor injuries.
London City Airport's only runway was closed after the incident and is not expected to open until tomorrow. A number of flights have been diverted to other London airports.
