London City Airport passengers up 23%

A record number of passengers passed through London City Airport last year. The Docklands hub handled more than 2.9 million passengers in 2007, up 23% over the previous year. The figures were boosted by a number of new routes, including flights to Belfast, Glasgow, Groningen, Madrid, Nice, Oslo and Vienna.
The airport is now gearing up for even more passengers this year, with a number of new routes already announced including to Berlin Tegel by Lufthansa and to Nice, Barcelona, Warsaw and Amsterdam by British Airways. Eleven airlines will serve 33 destinations across the UK and Europe from the spring.
London City has also submitted a planning application last year to expand capacity from 80,000 to 120,000 flight movements, which would create an additional 1000 jobs at the airport. It is also is spending £30 million constructing four new aircraft parking stands and the departure lounge is being reconfigured to allow for additional passengers to be accommodated. Both projects are forecast for completion in the spring.
London City Airport chief executive, Richard Gooding, said: 'There is no doubt that passengers all across London and the south-east are waking up to the options offered by this airport, not least the attractive five minutes taken to exit the terminal from the steps of the aircraft.'
