ScotAirways losses treble after 'difficult year'

ScotAirways, the niche airline operating flights from Scotland to London City Airport, has almost trebled its losses after "a difficult trading year". The latest set of accounts also signal that the airline has abandoned its original plan of turning a profit solely from flying a regular service from Dundee and Edinburgh to London City Airport, and has now turned itself into a charter operation focusing on Scotland, London and the Channel Islands.
The accounts show that pre-tax losses at ScotAirways plunged to more than £2.1m in 2006, compared with a loss of £757,323 the year before. Turnover slipped to £22.1m from £22.3m. In the accounts the directors say: 'Following a difficult year's trading, the group undertook an extensive business review in the early part of 2007. As a result of this, the directors took the decision to restructure the business as a lease and charter operation.'
ScotAirways still flies between Scotland and London but, as previously reported, last month the service became a franchise of partner Air France Cityjet. During the coming months the aircraft used on the routes will be painted in the Cityjet for Air France livery and cabin interiors will gradually be refitted and will offer two classes. Cabin crew are already wearing the CityJet for Air France uniform.
Last month, the company also signed a contract with Blue Island to provide services out of the Channel Islands.
