London City Airport flights cap increased
10.07.09
London City Airport has had its flight cap increased by 50 percent. The Borough of Newham said it had agreed to raise the number of flights from 80,0000 to 120,000 in and out of the airport, despite objections from environmentalists. The expansion is expected to create 957 jobs and generate £26 million for the local economy, the airport said.
Environmental groups opposed the increase in flights on the grounds that it will increase harmful greenhouses gases that are emitted into the atmosphere. A Newham Council spokeswoman said that early morning flights will not be increased and that there will continue to be strict restrictions on night and weekend operations.
Last year a record 3.2 million passengers passed through the Docklands airport, a 12 percent increase on 2007. Passenger numbers are expected to be lower in 2009, with a 20 percent decline so far this year. However, the airport expects the number of passengers will rise next year 3.9 million, as the aviation market picks up and more flights are offered.
