Austrian cut London City Airport flights
10.07.08
Austrian Airlines said today that it will end service to London City Airport. The airline is also axing is flights to Chicago and cutting back on flights to New York, Washington, Mumbai and other destinations because of soaring jet fuel costs. The airline also said it would raise fuel surcharges on most tickets booked after July 15.
Austrian will no longer serve London City from August 18, the airline said in a statement. Its service to Chicago will cease later this year, when it also will eliminate two weekly flights to Mumbai, India, New York and Washington. It will also be cutting back on services to several European cities yet to be determined in 2009.
The airline's CEO, Alfred Oetsch, called the move a ‘purposeful reaction’ to the high fuel costs troubling the travel industry. No redundancies are planned, he said.
