Flybe not considering Exeter - London City Airport flights

Flybe will not introduce daily flights from its base at Exeter Airport to London City Airport, despite demand from local businesses, the Exeter Echo has reported. The newspaper says that business leaders in Exeter are being consulted on whether there would be sufficient demand for a daily service to London City, which is in the heart of the capital's business district, but a spokesman for Flybe said that it would not be launching the flights.
Exeter Chamber of Commerce believes there would be high demand for a daily service and thinks London City Airport would be ideally placed to handle the flights. Derek Phillips, chairman of the chamber, said: 'We are trying to get the views of our members and whether this would be something they would want to support. The ones I have spoken to so far have been supportive.'
'Prices will be competitive to rail prices. A lot of businesses are having problems with First Great Western and the idea of a flight to London is very attractive. The route has to be viable though.'
A spokesman for Exeter Airport said it would welcome a London route from the city. He said: 'A London route is high on our wish list and we are always in talks with airlines about it. It's one of the routes regularly requested. We are constantly talking to a variety of possible airlines that might wish to work with us on this.'
Exeter based regional low-cost airline Flybe launched flights from the airport to Paris and Amsterdam following pressure from the business community. But the airline says it does not have plans for a London route - even though it received requests for it from time to time.
A spokesman said: It's not a route we are planning to operate. It flies in the face of our commitment to sustainable air travel. Exeter has a well-established rail link.'
