Row intensifies over London Ashford (Lydd) Airport expansion plans

A row has broken after a campaign group accused the owners of London Ashford Airport at Lydd of exaggerating the number of new jobs likely to be created by the airport's expansion.
The Lydd Airport Action Group (LAAG) spokesman Louise Barton said that job creation estimates included in the aiprort's planning application - 1,000 direct airport jobs a year for every million passengers carried - were too high. A more realistic figure, she said, would be based on Prestwick and Manston Airport management's job targets of 300 jobs for every million passengers carried a year.
But the airport's Managing Director, Zaher Deir, denied the allegations. He said: 'Our environmental impact assessment identifies the number of jobs created directly at the airport. These staff will be on the airport's payroll. What's not included in our documents is estimates about the additional jobs created by airlines, other aviation-related companies, catering franchises and so on.'
