Talks on Liverpool Airport strike continue

Liverpool Airport bosses have said that they were confident they can avoid industrial action in the dispute over pay. A spokesman said the results from five mass meetings with workers had been positive ahead of a ballot of union members.
Staff, including firefighters and air-side safety workers, will begin balloting from Friday on whether to take strike action in support of their pay and working conditions claim. The result is expected to be announced on November 9.
If staff support the call for walkouts, the airport could be closed due to lack of fire cover. However, even though management has tabled what it has described as its 'final offer', it has pledged to continue talks with union representatives during the ballot.
Members of the GMB and Unite unions rejected the company's final offer by 82% in a ballot earlier this month. The deal would have been worth 3.8% backdated to April, rising to 4% from the beginning of October.
