Liverpool Airport first to harness wind power

Liverpool Airport has said that it is the first commercial airport in the UK to install and operate wind turbines. The initiative is one of a number steps it is taking to minimise its impact on the environment.
Two 15-metre-high, six-kilowatt turbines have been installed either side of the airport's main approach road, which managers say provides a 'dramatic gateway' to the hub that is visible to all passengers. Each turbine generates enough electricity to power a standard 4-6 bedroom house.
The project is currently a trial to assess the effect of large turbines on sensitive air traffic control equipment, but could lead to the installation of more turbines to boost green power generation at the airport.
Andrew Dutton, Liverpool's environment manager, said: 'The airport will continually look at ways to minimise the environmental impact of operating a growing regional airport. The wind turbines, along with other renewable energy sources, could play an important part in the airport's future development.'
This is the second time that the airport has implemented pioneering environmental initiatives, having been the first UK hub to introduce its own carbon offsetting initiative known as 'Last Call!' 18 months ago. This scheme gives passengers the opportunity to donate money towards planting trees to offset the carbon emissions of their flight.
