easyJet celebrates 10 years at Liverpool Airport
23.10.07
easyJet is to celebrate ten years of operating at Liverpool Airport this week. The low-cost airline's first route from the Merseyside hub - to Amsterdam - took off on October 27, 1997, less than two years after easyJet was established. Its celebrations will go on at the airport all this week, including competitions, parties, birthday cake and champagne for passengers.
Over the last ten years the airline's flights from Liverpool, just like the airline itself, have gone from strength to strength. It now has eight aircraft based at the airport and flies 2.5 million passengers per year on 19 routes to 7 countries.
Andy Harrison, easyJet's chief executive, said: 'The arrival of easyJet at Liverpool ten years ago not only provided the region with direct low-fare flights to Europe but also boosted the local economy with its commitment to investment and jobs in the area.' He added that new flights to Lisbon would launch next week, with flights to Innsbruck taking off in December, in time for this year's ski season.
Neil Pakey, Managing Director at Liverpool Airport, said: 'Since easyJet began operations from Liverpool in 1997, the airline has carried over 17 million passengers. 'easyJet's arrival in Liverpool has played a critical role in putting the city in the heart of Europe and Europe in the heart of Liverpool.'
