Fireman cleared over Liverpool Airport driving tragedy
22.12.07
A probe will be carried out by Merseyside fire chiefs into a fatal accident after firefighter David Robinson was cleared over the death of a motorist in the crash. Mr Robinson, 36, was found not guilty at Liverpool crown court of causing death by dangerous driving and careless driving after father-of-two Derek Kelly was killed in January.
Mr Robinson was on an emergency call to Liverpool Airport when his fire service vehicle drove through a red light and collided with a Mercedes being driven by Derek Kelly, 46. He was left with fatal injuries by the smash in Garston Way near the hub.
Fire chiefs have said they are to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. A Merseyside Fire and Rescue statement called the incident a 'tragic accident' and extended its condolences to the victim's family.
During the trial, the court heard that Mr Robinson had driven his four-and-a-half-tonne fire service vehicle through south Liverpool after reports that a plane had to perform an emergency landing at the airport.
