easyJet plans major expansion at Liverpool Airport
19.12.07
Budget airline easyJet is to expand its base at Liverpool Airport with the addition of two new aircraft, making a total of 10 planes based at the hub. The growth is part of a major expansion announced yesterday at Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester airports.
The Luton-based airline announced its first flights from Manchester, but pledged its commitment to Liverpool, where it has flown from for 10 years and is the airport's largest airline. Mike Campbell, easyJet director, said: 'We remain committed to our base at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.'
The growth at the two airports will make easyJet the biggest no-frills carrier in the north west, ahead of Irish rival Ryanair, with four million passengers a year, including 2.6 million from Liverpool Airport. The budget airline currently serves 20 routes from Liverpool.
The addition of the new aircraft will boost its north west operations to nearly 40 routes, carrying 4 million passengers and employing, directly and indirectly, about 4,000 staff throughout the region.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport managing director Neil Pakey said: 'This is very good news. For us to have 10 based aircraft here is a huge milestone and it is really good that easyJet sees Liverpool as being a major regional gateway for years ahead.'
The airport recently completed its Master Plan, which will be launched in January 2008, to set out possible future infrastructure developments to cater for the forecast 8.3 million passengers by 2015 and 12.3 million passengers by 2030.
