Liverpool Airport baggage handlers to strike
17.11.11
Baggage handlers at Liverpool Airport have voted to strike in protest over compulsory redundancies, the Daily Post reports. The GMB union has announced a 'discontinuous strike' starting on November 23. Servisair staff will walk out for two hours each morning and afternoon next Wednesday and the following Friday, Sunday and Monday.
The dispute by 101 staff will affect Ryanair, easyJet, KLM, FlyBe and WizzAir. Union leaders warned that the strikes are likely to cause delays, cancellations with the possibility of rescheduling or flights leaving without luggage. The airport is working to try and minimise any potential problems and it is reported that Servisair will try to draft in workers from other airports.
GMB claim up to a third of the workforce could lose their jobs and has accused Servisair of a ‘blatant profit-making exercise’. A Servisair spokesman said that it had not been informed of a ballot or potential strike, however, an airport spokesman told the newspaper that Servisair had assured them contingency plans would be put in place.
