Fundraiser at Liverpool Airport Hotel tomorrow
17.11.07
One of Europe's biggest aviation restoration projects is staging a special fundraising open day event tomorrow at a Liverpool Airport hotel. The former British Eagle Airlines' Bristol Britannia, nicknamed Charlie Fox, is being restored at the old Speke Airport Aerodrome, now the Marriott Hotel, Liverpool South.
Built under licence by Short Bros in Belfast, the 1958-built plane is one of only five survivors from the 85 Bristol Britannias built, which were the last great propeller-driven airliners dubbed 'the whispering giants'. Charlie Fox is being reconstructed outside the hangar which was its base during the mid-1960s, but it now a David Lloyd sports centre.
Roy Coates, chairman of The Jetstream Club which is undertaking the restoration, said: 'As Charlie Fox was based at Speke while owned by British Eagle, it is also an important part of our local aviation heritage.'
Charlie Fox will be on display outside the hotel restaurant tomorrow between 10:00 - 16:00. Entry via Marriott Hotel Liverpool South and admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more information visit www.jetstream-club.org.
