AOA says European Parliament decision on airport charges a 'step backwards'
17.01.08
The Airport Operators Association (AOA) has responded to this week's vote in the European Parliament that will increase the number of UK airports subject to price regulation. It has expressed disappointment that the Parliament has adopted an arbitrary minimum passenger threshold of 5 million.
Deputy Chair of the AOA (and managing director at Liverpool Airport), Neil Pakey, said: 'This is a step backwards, and conflicts with the Department for Transport's own actions in de-designating Manchester Airport just 24 hours previously.'
'The AOA has argued that the threshold for regulation of airport charging should be based on market share, not the blunt instrument of simple passenger numbers. We are working closely with the Government, the CAA and our European colleagues on this issue, and we will continue to make the case for a fair system of charging for UK airports.'
