Liverpool Airport strike deadline set
16.11.07
Liverpool Airport workers will strike from next Thursday unless their wage demands are met, union leaders told management today. Firefighters, air traffic control and maintenance staff, airfield safety officers and airport parking staff are involved in the action and if they walk out they will bring the airport to a standstill.
The union has also warned airport management not to escalate the situation by bringing in outside cover. GMB union organiser Eddie Parker said: 'The company own other airports (Durham Tees Valley and Robin Hood) and are probably looking at contingency. But if they bring in people to use the fire engines, we would not use them again.'
In a more positive sign, Mr. Parker met with members of the GMB and Unite unions at the airport yesterday who agreed to lower their wage demands from the original 4.8% they called for. He was set to meet management today to table the latest demand - and to inform them of plans to strike from November 22 if they fail to meet it.
