AOA says Government must ensure adequate BIA resources are deployed at UK airports

Responding to Immigration Minister Liam Byrne's speech earlier this week outlining the success of the Borders & Immigration Agency (BIA) in 2007, the Airport Operators Association is urging the Government to ensure that it deploys adequate BIA resources at UK airports to avoid a repeat of last summer's queues.
Deputy Chair of the Airport Operators Association (and CEO at Liverpool Airport) Neil Pakey said: 'Airport operators are committed to ensuring that passenger journeys are as smooth and hassle-free as possible. It is unacceptable to expect passengers to put up with lengthy delays at immigration desks, as was seen at a number of UK hubs last summer.'
'The Government's commitment to invest in the work of the BIA is welcome, but it should be backed up with a deployment of sufficient resources on the frontline at airports in order to minimise disruption to our passengers.'
'Action should also be taken to reduce the waiting time for non-EEA nationals. The current BIA benchmark of 40 minutes is being monitored, but not managed. It is not reasonable for people to have to queue for long periods of time because of a lack of resources at immigration control.'
