MP wants army to protect airports
04.06.08
A special army unit should be formed to secure the airports and ports against illegal immigration and terrorism according to a Lancashire MP, the BBC reports. Lindsey Hoyle, who represents Chorley, has submitted his proposal to Gordon Brown for consideration in the Terrorism Bill.
Mr Hoyle claims the army has invaluable experience of border control gained from the troubles in Northern Ireland, and that this would help Customs and Excise make the UK more secure.
The MP told the BBC: ‘The main port in my local area obviously is Liverpool and Fleetwood as well and Heysham and the two airports Liverpool Airport and the major airport of Manchester. People would feel secure they would feel protected. It's not just about illegal immigration, it's terrorism, gun running and drug smuggling. We would be able to crack down on all those things that people are concerned about on the street.’
