Liverpool Airport pilots fear laser disaster
05.08.09
A warning about the dangers of shining laser lights up at aircraft heading to Liverpool Airport has been issued by Cheshire Police. It came after several incidents were reported in the Frodsham and Chester areas during the last week of July. Police said the lights could cause temporary blindness for pilots.
The first incident was late on July 27 when an inbound aircraft from Milan had a green laser light directed toward it. A few days later an aircraft from Ibiza was descending at 3000ft when a green light was directed toward it as the aircraft was in a descending turn across Frodsham. Another incident happened on July 31 where pilots reported a green light being shone at them near the Broughton area.
In all three cases, the planes landed safely and Cheshire Police are certain the same group is responsible for each of the incidents. Police and airport authorities have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
