29.04.08
A university professor has appeared in court charged with making a hoax bomb claim at Leeds Bradford Airport. Appearing at Leeds Magistrates Court yesterday Dr Efthymis Zagorianakos, 41, who lectures in geography and environmental management at the University of Bradford, pleaded not guilty to charges under Section 51 of the Criminal Law Act 1977 of communicating false information about a bomb and now faces a trail.
Dr Zagorianakos is accused of saying that he had a bomb in his luggage as he checked in for a flight to Amsterdam on April 18. He is also accused of telling a fellow passenger ‘it's only a small bomb’ after she expressed alarm at his comment.
Wearing a brown jacket, tan trousers and orange top, and carrying a black rucksack, the grey-haired professor spoke only to confirm his name and plea. He was released on bail and will appear before Leeds Crown Court on June 9 for trial. If found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of seven years in jail.
