High winds strand passengers at Leeds Bradford Airport
26.01.08
Hundreds of airline passengers faced chaos yesterday as crosswinds of up to 65 mph prevented planes from taking off and landing at Leeds Bradford Airport. At least eight flights to destinations including Dublin, Edinburgh, Belfast and Heathrow, were cancelled - with some replaced by bus services - with other flights delayed by more than four hours.
The wind became too severe for flights to operate from the hub shortly after noon. Some incoming flights were diverted to Robin Hood, Manchester and Durham Tees Valley airports. This meant that passengers taking outgoing flights that these planes would operate had to be bussed to these airports in order to catch their flights.
A spokeswoman for Leeds Bradford Airport said the winds were 'unusually high'. She said: 'There were some pretty gusty winds coming across the Pennines. They reached nearly 65 mph - enough to do some damage - so you would expect flights to be cancelled.'
Newcastle Airport was also affected, with four flights to and from Amsterdam cancelled and others re-routed.
