Bristol and Leeds Bradford Airport 'generate as much CO2 as an African country'
11.10.07
Leeds Bradford Airport generates the same amount of CO2 each year as the entire African country of Gambia, whilst Bristol Airport generates as much CO2 as Malawi, an environmental body has claimed. The World Development Movement Group has produced rankings of all of the country's major airports in terms of the carbon emissions they emit in a year.
Although emissions at Leeds Bradford and Bristol do not compare to the likes of Heathrow and Gatwick, the charity says it is shocked that the airport can impact the climate as much as an entire country. A spokesman said that the UK-wide growth in aviation is undermining efforts to control climate change.
However, a spokesman for Leeds Bradford airport hit back at the claims, pointing out the contribution aviation makes to the developing economies of Africa and the relatively small impact which the emissions from planes make on the environment compared to other sources and industries. Emissions from aviation make up just 6.3% of the UK's total, with energy generation, shipping and even agriculture generating more CO2.
Bristol Airport is planning to expand, with passenger numbers expected to rise from nearly six million this year, to nine million by 2015. It wants to double the size of its terminal, allow parking for 5,000 cars and have 17 flights an hour. A spokesman for the airport said: Passenger numbers are up, but aircraft numbers have gone down. The industry is forecast to grow, but also to become greener and cleaner.'
