Emergency landing at Leeds Bradford Airport
03.02.08
A passenger plane carrying just over 100 people made an emergency landing at Leeds Bradford Airport yesterday.
A full emergency was declared when the pilot of an Austrian Airlines flight radioed ahead to report a problem with one of the engines. The crew of the Fokker 100, travelling from Innsbruck to Leeds, had noticed the engine was malfunctioning.
Up to 12 fire engines were seen at the airport ready for the emergency landing at 15:00. However, eyewitnesses said the plane appeared to land without any problems.
A spokesman for the airport said: 'The right engine is what they called idle, it wasn't working correctly. The aircraft had 103 people on board but thankfully the aircraft made a safe landing and no-one was injured. Everybody has been taken off and nobody was hurt.' The airport was operating normally and no other flights had been affected, she added.
Austrian Airlines said in a statement that it should not be called an emergency. Livia Dandrea-Boehm said: 'It was not an emergency landing. It was a normal landing with one engine in idle mode - which means having priority for landing at air traffic control.'
