Revenues up, passengers down at Highlands airports

Highland and Islands Airports (HIAL) saw revenues up by 12% and freight traffic by 4% in 2008, but saw fewer passengers pass through its eleven airport's doors, the company's accounts and annual report show.
Revenue earned from traffic operations and other activities increased by 12% to £17,057,000, in what the company described as a ‘challenging market’. This was achieved through a combination of increased receipts from air traffic at the firm's airports and more income generated from non-aviation activities such as property and concessions.
More than 1.2 million passengers used the airports during the year - a decrease of 3% over the previous period and the first fall in passenger traffic in 7 years. HIAL said the fall in passenger numbers was primarily due to the withdrawal of bmi's Inverness to Heathrow service in March 2008. Other airports in the UK have shown a similar decrease.
The accounts show that HIAL needed smaller Scottish Government subsidies during the year. The payments from Holyrood totaled £26,828,000 - 8% less than the previous year.
