Aer Lingus seeks Heathrow slots for expansion
29.09.11
Aer Lingus CEO Christoph Mueller told Dow Jones Newswires the airline is in a good position for growth and is pushing to buy slots at Heathrow Airport to secure its expansion plans. He said the Irish airline started the year with modest growth expectations, but it is seeing stronger-than-expected demand in its business-class segment, in particular across the Atlantic, as companies like social-networking site Twitter look to set up a base in Ireland.
He said the airline is benefiting from the fact Ireland is an export market and, as the only English-speaking euro-denominated country, it is attracting business from the US. He added that Aer Lingus is keen to increase the airline's slot portfolio at Heathrow, but declined to comment on whether he is in talks with BMI, which last week sold six daily takeoff and landing slots to British Airways for an undisclosed sum.
