Conservatives repeat Heathrow runway opposition
29.01.10
Theresa Villiers, the Conservative transport secretary, reiterated that her party would not support building a third runway at Heathrow airport if it wins the upcoming general election. She said the party would not change its stance opposing an expansion of one of the world's busiest international airports, despite a report from an influential Conservative think tank backing the runway earlier this month.
Ms Villiers made her comments at an event hosted by the British Air Transport Association. The Labour government last year gave BAA the go-ahead to build a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow, though no public consultation is expected to start until after the national election. The plan faces fierce opposition from local residents and environmental groups, and appears increasingly unlikely to proceed.
