Transport secretary backs west country link to Heathrow
27.11.11
Transport Secretary Justine Greening has offered provisional support for building a £450 million Great Western rail line to Heathrow, slashing journey times between the west country and the airport, the Western Mail reports. Network Rail, which is responsible for track, is expected to publish a report by Christmas on whether a direct link between Reading and the airport is financially viable.
Shuttle services from the Berkshire station would mean passengers from Devon and Cornwall no longer need to travel in to London before heading out to the airport. Four-hour journey times between Plymouth and Heathrow could be cut to nearer to three hours.
At an event to champion ‘western access’ to Heathrow at the Houses of Parliament, Ms Greening said: ‘This is one of those projects where you can instinctively see the rationale behind it and the benefits it could bring. We all understand why finding a good solution to this challenge would be in everyone's interests.’
