BA upgrade Heathrow engineering base ready for A380 arrival

British Airways has completed the latest phase of the redevelopment project at its engineering base at Heathrow as it prepares for the arrival of Airbus A380 superjumbos in 2013. The hangars were large enough to accommodate the Boeing 747, but are being adjusted in order to house the A380 and its larger tail fin.
The hangars were built in the early 1950s and gained listed status from English Heritage in 1995. One of the new features of the structures is a 24-tonne roof 'eyebrow' that was lifted into place as workers raised the height of the entrance to one of the buildings.
Vance Williamson, head of property services for British Airways, said: 'This is an important step in converting our hangars ready for our new aircraft arriving in 2013. It will also allow British Airways to provide maintenance solutions to other A380 customers at Heathrow.'
