BA launch cabin crew recruitment drive
25.06.10
British Airways has launched a huge recruitment programme in a bid to undermine Unite’s plans for summer strikes. The airline plans to take on more than 1000 new staff initially and will pay them £18,000 for short haul work and long haul crew £35,000, which is less than current crew. Adverts for the new roles appeared yesterday.
Unite told the airline that it was planning to ballot members on new strike action if the dispute was not resolved by next week, which could mean walk-outs at the start of August and lasting until the end of October. Currently, neither side will back down over a dispute originally over pay, conditions and staffing, but which now includes the use of non-cabin crew during strikes, the withdrawal of travel benefits for strikers and disciplinary action against more than sixty strikers, some of whom have already been dismissed. It will probably include recruiting new staff on different conditions soon too !
