Climate action group to target Heathrow
24.05.07
The 'Camp for Climate Action' climate change activists who protested outside the Drax power station last summer, have announced that they are planning to shift attention to Heathrow, the world's busiest international airport, this summer. They plan to 'disrupt the operation of Heathrow for a week in mid-August', but say they will not try to block runways.
Last summer over 600 people converged outside Drax coal-fired power station for 10 days of sustainable living and collective education, culminating in a day of mass action against Drax. Around forty were arrested. This year, the Camp for Climate Action 'will pitch its tents near Heathrow airport' from August 14 to August 21.
The group plans to 'oppose the lunacy of the government's airport expansion plans, target industry giants profiteering from the climate crisis, and raise awareness of the need to fly less', according to a note sent out to media this morning. The activists say that the effect of Heathrow's planes on the climate is equivalent to 31 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
The Camp for Climate Action will aim to disrupt the operation of Heathrow for a week in mid-August, with a day of mass direct action aiming to disrupt the activities of the airport and the aviation industry. This will not include trying to block runways, but could involve blocking roads around the airport, which would cause chaos.
